1. Create A Home Base

In order to effectively promote yourself online you need a base of operations to work from. Whether you are an individual artist, collective or large organization, you need a foundation on which to build your web presence.  In this day and age, it is vital to have a digital space to call your own. From there, hub whatever is relevant (ex: bio/pictures/contact info) and branch out.

For example, a home base can be a website, Facebook page or even a Word Press blog, which can be all accessed for FREE. Work within your means. From there, connect/hub other Social Media platforms (ex Twitter feed) and upload content or materials that you feel will help you move forward.

2. Pick Your Battles

The realm of Social Media is vast and it is nearly impossible to establish a meaningful presence on each platform without diluting yourself. Rather than spreading yourself thin, focus on two Social Media platforms best suited to your needs and cross promote them.

For example, using your Twitter account to promote your Facebook page or vise versa.

Most importantly, understand the uniqueness of each Social Media platform and take into consideration different cultures, languages, norms, and frequency of posts for each platform.

3. Engagement

Communication is a two way street. Don’t just send out messages on these platforms and expect growth.Listen and be responsive to your audience. Respond to their inquiries and comments in a timely manner. Ask questions, stir the pot, and seek feedback to create activity. Be professional; your reputation is on the line. Respect your online community.

Remember, if you delete a message after it has been posted, it after it has been indexed somewhere.

4. Maintain A Balance

Find a balance between the online world and the real world. Social Media allows you to build and maintain relationships and explore new ones.

5. Don’t Give Up

To the untrained eye, the world of the Social Media may be viewed as a chaotic entity could devour you. Don’t be afraid! Building something takes time. Have realistic goals and create a plan. Find online tools to help you manage and track your Social Media accounts. Don’t work hard… work smart!
