Congratulations Bruno Capinan, 2014 TELUS Newcomer Artist Award Recipient
On October 16, 2014, our network, community, staff and board members came together to celebrate Toronto’s diverse newcomer artists from every corner of the city. Brazilian, singer-songwriter, Bruno Capinan took top honours for it at the TELUS Newcomer Artist Award ceremony.
A big congratulations to Bruno and all of our finalists! It was a wonderful evening, event and an exceptional way to celebrate the fantastic accomplishments of diverse newcomer artists in Toronto.
“Interacting with someone new is what inspires me the most,” Capinan was quoted while at the podium at the TELUS House in the TELUS Tower on York St., accepting the award for his contributions to Toronto’s music scene, poetry, visual art, and radio. “Just watching people, listen[ing] to a random conversation on the public transit can spark a new line for a new song. The human condition and its fragility are in the core of my work as an artist.”
The TELUS Newcomer Artist Award celebrates newcomer artists in Toronto who have an outstanding body of work and make a significant contribution in the community. Through its research, Toronto Arts Foundation has identified a great need to support newcomer artists in Toronto. This $10,000.00 award is an exceptional way to celebrate their accomplishments.
“As the Neighbourhood Arts Network we feel it is important to recognize the invaluable contribution of newcomer artists in the community engaged arts sector in Toronto,” said Ella Cooper, Manager, Neighbourhood Arts Network. “We are really proud to celebrate these newcomer artists in this way.”
It was not an easy decision. Our 4 jurors reviewed over 60 incredible applications and narrowed the applications down to 6 outstanding artists. The finalists for the award included Naomi Abiola, Carlos Delgado, Sunny Drake, Maziar Heidari and Ghazal Partou. You can check out their work and learn more about the finalists on our website: www.neighbourhoodartsnetwork.org.
We are thankful for the support of TELUS who is the sponsor of the Newcomer Artist Award, helping us recognize the brilliancy of newcomer artists in Toronto!
