May Chook is a jazz and improvising vocalist, community artist, sound artist, and arts event organizer based in Toronto, Canada. Born in Malaysia, she came to Canada to study with a full scholarship and received a Specialized Honours Bachelor of Fine Arts in Music from York University. She has also received training in safe space facilitation from ArtReach + NIA Centre for the Arts.
May's works focus on creativity, expressions and accessibility. She advocates programs and events that promote local artists and arts education for community-in-need. She currently leads Creative Music and Voice workshops for Arts for Children and Youth and at Artscape Youngplace. In 2014, she started a community event initiative named CCJAM (Community Creative Jam). She also sits on the board of a number of organizations including North York Arts' programming sub-committee, Association of Improvising Musicians in Toronto (AIMT), and Big Bam Boom Youth-Led Arts Festival.
