My name is Tan Vu, and I am a musical theatre performer. I discovered my passion for musical theatre during my Master’s program at Indiana University in the U.S. My first role was Enjolras in IU’s Les Misérables, which helped me realize this is my calling.
I responded to casting calls for professional productions upon return to Vietnam. In 2016, I made my ensemble debut in Saigon Conservatory of Music’s A Broadway Journey, and in Saigon Opera House’s Carmen. November 2017, I performed my first featured role as Frank, the singing bellhop, in Dragonfly Theatre Company’s Lend Me a Tenor at the professional stage of Saigon’s Soul Live Project. Joy abounded when I found myself delivering a rendition of Rossini’s “Largo Al Factotum” to an audience of 1,050 for 7 shows. This public presentation earned me my first actor review and set the momentum for subsequent paid roles at Dragonfly Theatre and the talent scholarship at the American Musical & Dramatic Academy in New York.
Relocating to Toronto on 28 October 2019, I have been fortunate to gain professional experience for every month since arrival in diverse performing disciplines: sacred music, choral work, operetta production with Toronto Operetta Theatre, Toronto Mendelssohn Choir, Summer Opera Lyric Theatre (upcoming), and several churches. Grateful as I have been, I desire to focus on developing my artistic practice and believe that joining Neighborhood Arts Network will open doors for me to attain my career goals.
Thoughts About Art and Community
Musical theatre is a distinctive cross-disciplinary arts form that blends music, theatre, and dance to holistically convey stories or social messages that stir minds and move hearts. As a musical theatre artist, I use my voice, energy, physical agility and movement to engage audience members of diverse backgrounds in a multi-faceted story-telling experience that advances cross-cultural understanding & respect and promote integration to Toronto's arts and cultural landscape.
A versatile performer with 8.5 years of experience in musical, opera, operetta, theatrical and choral productions in Canada, the U.S. and Vietnam, I seek to contribute my capabilities to concerts, productions, religious services, and events of diverse natures.
I am also a Fulbright Scholar with extensive arts fundraising experience (which may be of value to non-profit arts organizations), and an advanced practitioner of Hatha and Power Yoga.
