Unraku Studios is an artist-run, non-profit production studio based in Toronto, Canada dedicated to exploring and developing the art of puppetry. We’re also the home of The Unraku Workshop, an in-house puppet fabrication studio, and Unraku School, an annual series of puppetry workshops and masterclasses.
We're a spin-off of the original Unraku Puppetry Collective, which was active in Toronto from 2008 - 2013. Currently, we work out of a private studio and several maker spaces in Toronto’s West End and are actively searching for a new permanent studio location, which we plan to open in 2020.
Thoughts About Art and Community
We'd like to help establish puppetry as a more widely recognized art form in the city. We're also currently developing several community-based programs that we hope to be able to announce soon.
"Unraku School" is an annual series of professional training workshops held in different locations throughout the Greater Toronto/Hamilton Area. We also host masterclasses with visiting Canadian and international puppetry artists and offer hands-on "behind the scenes" opportunities to explore our work and process at pop culture conventions, maker festivals and other events throughout the year.
