Eco Architecture Environmental Program
About:
All AFCY programs are environmentally focused. Where possible we use recyclable materials and foster relationships with organizations that provide us with reusable and fun materials such as cardboard sono tubes and scrap fabric. However, AFCY also offers programs with themes that relate specifically to environmental education.
For example, the Eco Architecture Environmental Program brings youth and eco architects together to build architectural 3D models of eco-friendly tree houses. School students design sustainable tree houses that are constructed to respond to localized issues and the immediate environment.
This place-based educational approach is grounded in the notions of stewardship, leadership and the concept of reducing our eco-footprint. While designing “green” tree houses, students develop research skills, increase their awareness of environmental issues, and develop problem-solving skills as they think creatively. Such processes empower students. Not only do they build confidence in their own creative abilities, but they also give voice to real concerns about the environment both locally and globally. There is great potential in programs where the youth discover that they CAN make a difference.
