AFCY has created an innovative new Drumming Program that engages children and youth with music through performance, instrument making and learning. The program includes African Drumming, authentic drum-making and social as well as cultural learnings. The program offers teachers and principals in under-resourced schools the resources to confidently meet the objectives of the 2009 Ontario Arts Curriculum. The program corresponds directly to the theme of non-western socio-cultural music, which is mandated in the revised curriculum. It presents drumming as a cross-curricular resource in core subject areas.

Launched in three schools in Spring 2010, the program will add new schools each year for three consecutive years. Once made, the drums function as a sustainable educational resource for the school and for the community. AFCY is creates intra- and inter-school performances and opportunities for the youth drummers to participate in cultural festivals in Toronto, as well as in the 2010 AFCY BIG BAM BOOM Youth Arts Festival.
