Call for Artist

July 11, 2012

 Calling all artists!

Apply to become a Workshop Facilitator for the Emerging ARTivist Program!

Please submit this application form by the DEADLINE on Friday July 20th, 2012

ABOUT THE PROGRAM:

The Sustainable Thinking and Expression on Public Space (STEPS) Initiative believes the most powerful way to enliven/animate public space is through art. That’s why STEPS started the Emerging ARTivist Program – to enable our next generation of ARTivists: those who use art to transform public spaces. This exciting workshop and leadership program will offer capacity building opportunities for children and youth age 9-18 around using art to transform their local community. Program participants will wrestle with several questions through activities planned by STEPS and our workshop facilitators, including: what is public space, and why is it necessary? What makes a public space great?

How can public spaces contribute to community life?

This program has already taken place in Thorncliffe Park, where the program became popular with local children and teens. We’re excited to bring it to the vibrant community of St. James Town in the summer and fall of 2012.

The program is two-tiered in that it engages both children and youth simultaneously. Youth Facilitators, from the neighbourhood, aged 14-18 will participate in a 3-day youth training retreat August 24th – 26th, with STEPS staff, artists and guest facilitators, at which they will learn about anti-oppression frameworks, building a safe and engaging space, public speaking, working as a team, and various facilitation techniques. These teens will then co-facilitate public art workshops with selected artists on Saturdays in September 2012. It is vital that they have an important role to play at these workshops, their own learning objectives and have the opportunity to contribute ideas or feedback on the workshop plan as well as get acquainted with the selected artists (workshop facilitators) and their media at the retreat.

THE CALL:

We are looking for artists that are able to facilitate workshops with both youth (up to 10, age 14-18) and children (up to 30, age 9-12) that draw on their artistic media to create an engaging, creative and thought-provoking environment themed around the goals of the program.

Workshop facilitators will lead one workshop in September of 3-6 hours that provides an opportunity for participants to engage with some of the program key goals and questions, as well as a new artistic medium. Each workshop should culminate in some form of public presentation of work or community engagement activities that both parents and the broader community can be invited to attend and/or engage with in some way – ideally making them more aware of the program goals and in some form local public space issues.

Workshop facilitators will also provide an introductory workshop to Youth Facilitators at their retreat in August, that clearly introduces yourself, your artistic process, the media with which you work, their role in the upcoming workshop and provide an opportunity for them to provide feedback on how to make it more locally relevant. Following the workshop series, Youth Facilitators will develop a local public space project of their own, to which you may be called upon to contribute your expertise.
