Beyond Sound Empijah Performance

On June 9th at 5:30 pm, Beyond Sound Empijah (Beyond Sound), a GTA-based collective of drum and dance artists, will be captivating audiences for the second year in a row at The 13th Annual Muhtadi International Drumming Festival (MIDF) in Woodbine Park, in the Toronto Beaches.

Since debuting last year, Beyond Sound Empijah has performed at private and public venues in Canada, South America, the United States and the Caribbean. Beyond Sound’s unique mix of classical and modern drum and dance genres has captured the imaginations and minds of artists and non-artists alike.

Beyond Sound Empijah Performers include: Mafa, Mikhail Parson, Natasha Eck, N’dere Headley-Lindsay, Sean Clarke, Shaleeka Scarlett, Taejah Mark, Talib Marcus, and Yohance Francis Parsons. Beyond Sound Empijah will take the main stage at 5:30 pm Saturday, and share a piece called A Soldiers Life (Old School –New School).

Beyond Sound Empijah is a collective of young, professionally trained drum and dance performers from organizations from across the GTA, such as Ballet Creole, Collective of Black Artists (COBA) and the Ngoma Drum and Dance Ensemble. Performers range in age from 10 to 26, and bring a combined 25+ years of experience in the traditional African diaspora, the art of djembe, doudou playing and contemporary dance. As a collective of young artists, Beyond Sound Empijah’s mission is to engage youth in educating other youth through drum and music.
