The Theatre Centre

About:

The Theatre Centre develops, presents and produces new work that seeks to challenge, inspire, provoke and push the boundaries of live contemporary performance.

The Theatre Centre is committed to:
- Supporting artists and developing new ideas through its Residency Program
- Presenting and producing new works that cover and cross a range of disciplines
- Collaborating with national and international artists to bring new work to Toronto and take local work abroad
- Providing affordable rental space to independent arts organizations and community groups who need it

Established in 1979, The Theatre Centre is a not-for-profit organization currently located in the heart of Toronto’s West Queen West neighbourhood.

The Theatre Centre programs work that ignites debate, challenges expectations, embraces risk and defies the boundaries of live performance. The Theatre Centre presents/produces three to four shows per year.

The Theatre Centre's Residency Program provides artists and small companies with space, funding, and mentorship to enable them to develop their ideas into new performance works. Four to five groups are selected to participate every other year for this two-year program. The public play a vital role in this process by providing feedback to Residency Companies at regular showings of their works-in-progress.

In it’s thirty year history The Theatre Centre has supported hundreds of artists. It has initiated seventeen new works since 2004. Eleven of these went on to be professionally produced by The Theatre Centre, and three were produced by other companies.

The Theatre Centre is dedicated to providing a much needed home to artists who need space and support to create new work, and to engaging audiences with unique, inspiring, and unpredictable live performance.
